What is Passive House Design?

1. High-Performance Insulation
This is an important stage to get right, high-quality insulation throughout the building envelope, in the walls, roof, floor, and around all junctions to dramatically reduce heat loss. using building materials & techniques like Sips ( panels or if standard frame using California corners to help ensure a continuous insulation layer. Doing this means your home stays warm in winter and cool in summer with minimal energy input.
2. Airtight Construction
Passive House requires meticulous attention to airtightness. By eliminating drafts and uncontrolled airflow, we reduce heat loss and maintain a more consistent indoor environment. It also helps improve indoor air quality and acoustic comfort.
3. Triple-Glazed, High-Performance Joinery
Windows and doors are critical in Passive House. Triple-glazed units with thermally broken frames to retain warmth and harness passive solar gains especially in cooler climates or shaded sites found further south.
4. Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
A Passive House breathes but on its own terms. Balanced ventilation systems that supply fresh air and extract stale air continuously. Heat recovery units capture warmth from outgoing air and transfer it to the incoming fresh air, keeping energy loss to an absolute minimum.
5. Smart Orientation and Solar Design
Passive solar design plays a key role. Homes are positioned and detailed to maximise natural winter sun while using shading and overhangs to minimise summer heat gains. This helps reduce reliance on artificial heating or cooling systems.
